The Durmitor road trip
The road trip across the Durmitor mountains was one of the highlights of a one-month adventure in the Balkans in 2021. The road took us all the way up to the height of 1907 m above sea level, the highest paved pass in Montenegro.
The trip offered the delight of watching the breathtaking mountain scenery, with more than 40 rugged peaks above 2000 m and the valleys in between serving as home to shepherds and livestock. The two days in Durmitor provided a unique glimpse into the world of the mountain people.
We stopped over at Kamp Šarban near the Saddle Pass. We camped there for one night, in the company of cows, sheep, and shepherds, but not tourists.
Once we were all set at the campsite, we went to say hi to our neighbors. We were treated to a cup of coffee and had a friendly chat about their work as shepherds in Durmitor.
On waking up at Kamp Šarban, we spent the whole morning watching the daily routine of tending and milking the flock.
In another neighboring hut down the hill, I came across some Montenegro kids spending their last summer days in Durmitor.
Before setting off, we took a hike up the mountains, with the highest peak - Bobotov Kuk (2523 m) - standing out against the horizon.
